Our cashmere is made to last. From start to finish, the utmost care is made to ensure every piece will stand the test of time. Only the best fibres from the coat of the Mongolian goat are used with up to seven shades creating each unique Brora colour. Once complete, the finished garments are washed in soft Scottish water for a luxurious finish.
In addition to our renowned luxury cashmere, we also produce a range of high quality garments made from the finest yarns, including pure new wool, merino and mohair.
CASHMERE
All of Brora’s cashmere styles are made from the wool of the native goat of the Mongolian plateaux. Our cashmere is made to last and is durable, light and soft, providing excellent insulation.
PURE NEW WOOL
Pure new wool provides a warm and long lasting knitwear option. Brora’s pure new wool carries the Woolmark logo, one of the world's most recognised and respected brands, providing assurance of the highest quality.
MERINO WOOL
Merino wool is regarded as one of the softest types of wool available due to finer fibres which create a light weight, transitional alternative to cashmere.
MOHAIR
Known as ‘the diamond fibre’ due to its high lustre and fabulous sheen, mohair has been used since the 1030’s. This popular option comes from the hair of the Angora goat and has a wonderfully fluffy, textured finish.
COTTON
During spring and summer, we also offer a selection of cotton knits. Cotton is a soft staple fibre with very good breathable characteristics which is not only comfortable to wear but easy to care for.
TWEED
During autumn and winter, Brora creates a range of British tailored pieces crafted from tweed. Tweed is a traditional, textured, woollen fabric which is woven on looms and will last a lifetime.
Gauzy cashmere is where the fabric has a loose, open weave, making it lightweight, and allowing light and air to pass through it freely.
Woven cashmere is made from ‘Weft’ yarns that run sideways across the loom and across the fabric, and ‘Warp’ yarns that run along the length of the fabric. This produces a tighter weave when compared to gauzy, and the yarn count and number of warp to weft yarns within a square inch determine the closeness or looseness of the weave. The plain weave is the simple ‘over and under’ weave that produces the ‘checkerboard’ effect.
Cashmere Care
How easy is it to look after cashmere?
It’s not that difficult to look after cashmere. It may not be as simple as other garments which can be thrown in a washing machine, but it’s not as hard as many believe. If you follow the instructions carefully you’ll discover that it will be worth the extra effort.
How do I wash my cashmere?
Most of our cashmere is hand wash unless otherwise stated. To get the best from your cashmere, wash in lukewarm water using Brora’s mild cashmere shampoo and gently kneed. Do not wring or rub as this will stretch your garment. Rinse thoroughly but carefully and dry flat on a towel to help soak up any excess water.
How do I store my cashmere?
During the warmer months, chances are your cashmere knitwear won’t be worn as much as they were during the winter. Because of this you need to ensure that they are properly stored and protected. Always ensure your cashmere is clean before storing. Moths love dirty cashmere. Once cleaned, it is recommended that you keep them in a zip storage bag will help keep anything out and will protect your cashmere throughout the months that it isn’t being worn.
For more information on cashmere care, please refer to our full guide here.
One method of ridding your item of moths is to wrap your cashmere in an acid free tissue paper and then in a bag and place in the freezer for a few hours or overnight. The cold temperature will destroy anything living in the fibre without harming the cashmere. Don’t despair if you find holes. We hold yarn from the previous few seasons and can often match up the colour although you do have to darn it yourself – we couldn’t risk getting our enemy onto the mill floor.
Pilling is a natural process for cashmere, one that can’t be avoided, and doesn’t necessarily mean the material is of an inferior quality. Pilling is the shedding of loose fibres. Once they come loose, they gather in areas that get rubbed such as under the arm and form little balls of fluff. Looking after and respecting your cashmere can dramatically reduce pilling and keep your cashmere looking new and fresh.
How do I control pilling?
Pills can easily be removed by hand, but for a more efficient effect a cashmere comb cashmere comb can be used after washing. Doing this actually consolidates and softens the fibre, helping it improve with age.
