What is Cashmere Fabric?
Cashmere wool is sheared from cashmere goats. Traditionally, cashmere wool originates from central Asia and northern India where it was considered a scarcity. The name comes from a specific breed of goat from Kashmir, where production began in the 13th century.
Nowadays, cashmere goats are raised in Mongolia in larger quantities and there are several different breeds of cashmere goat to source the raw wool from.
However, as cashmere goats produce less wool than sheep, it’s still considered a much rarer fibre. The process of grading the hair to curate its luxury properties is also more extensive, which is why responsibly made cashmere clothing is precious and expensive.
How is Cashmere Made?
Shearing
Cashmere goats are sheared just once a year in the spring when they begin to moult and the wool is collected.

Sorting
The raw wool is then sorted by quality and colour and the greasy fibre is washed to remove any impurities.
Dehairing
Next a dehairing machine is used to remove the coarse guard hair from the under down to leave only the softest wool.
Dyeing
The cashmere fibres are then dyed before being dried and spun.
Carding
The fibres are combed again and then carding and teasing takes place to ensure fibres lay parallel to one another.
Spinning
A spinning wheel twists the fibres together to create yarn that can be crafted into cashmere clothing.
Knitting
Using these techniques, cashmere yarn can be crafted into a beautiful piece of clothing.
