Cotton is a natural fibre which comes from the outer seed of cotton plants. These fibres grow into a fluffy, white ball shape ready to be harvested. Cotton is mainly composed of cellulose and once woven it makes a beautifully soft and lightweight material.
All the cotton that we use at Brora is sourced from GOTS certified suppliers. This means that all our suppliers have followed binding ecological and social requirements to minimise negative impact on the environment.

Corduroy is an incredibly hard-working and velvety soft fabric, which is made instantly recognisable for its distinctive ridges or vertical ribs. This season, we are pleased to have some organic corduroy in our cord offering.

Picking
Plant leaves are removed, often using chemicals, in a process called defoliation. Machine pickers are then used to harvest the fluffy cotton fibres.
Ginning
A cotton gin is used to separate the seeds and remove dirt. It is then compressed and stored before being sent to a textile mill for manufacturing.
Carding
The clean and fluffy cotton is passed through a carding machine which aligns the short fibres into long, untwisted ropes called slivers.
Spinning
The strands of cotton are spun into a yarn which can vary in size, twist and ply depending on the desired outcome for the product.
Finishing
The yarns are made into a cotton fabric by spinning, knitting or weaving. This fabric is then used to create a beautiful Brora piece of clothing.
Cotton is grown in countries where there are long, hot seasons as the plants need warm conditions to thrive. Today, the largest producers include India, the United States, Brazil and Pakistan which make up 75% of global cotton production.
