What Makes Brora Cashmere So Special?

What Makes Brora Cashmere So Special?

No one makes cashmere quite like Brora, and there are many crucial and detailed steps we take to ensure that our Scottish cashmere remains a cut above the rest.

The Finest Cashmere Fibres

The Finest Cashmere Fibres

From selecting the finest and longest raw cashmere fibres and hand picking colours to create our colour blends that are unique to Brora, to the in-depth design process by our team in the UK. More than anything, what sets Brora cashmere apart, is the craftsmanship that goes into each and every piece, much of which is done by hand at one of the oldest cashmere mills in Scotland.

Every season, we carefully select the highest quality cashmere fibres from the native goat of the Mongolian plateau, carefully removing the coarse hairs to ensure our cashmere is Grade A. We only use the finest and longest fibres, so that you can be sure your garment will be of exceptional quality. For our Mongolian herders, cashmere is their main source of income, and the mill who produces all our cashmere are committed to securing goat herders’ livelihoods, restoring grasslands, and ensuring the wellbeing of the animals.

Traditional Craftmanship

Since Brora was founded in 1993, our cashmere has been made in one of the oldest mills in the Scottish borders. At the mill, the skills involved in working with cashmere have been passed down from generation to generation. Every step of the way, they apply their expertise and, in doing so, take their part in creating the highest quality, longest lasting cashmere that will stand the test of time. There are over 50 processes involved in making any one of our cashmere designs and as many as 37 people can be involved in the creation.

Hand Made

Hand Made

Many of the steps involved in creating our Scottish cashmere knitwear are carried out by hand, such as the cutting of a neckline and the linking of sleeves to the body of a garment. We also have a collection of hand knitted cashmere designs, which are lovingly created in the homes of keen knitters that live in Scotland. Our range of hand-knitted designs even include baby bootees and cardigans, the most thoughtful present for the newest members of the family.

Investment in Technology

Investment in Technology

Reducing waste when creating our Scottish cashmere jumpers and cardigans is important to us at Brora. Up to 97% of our manufacturing waste is recycled and used in other products. We also believe in investing in technology to aid us in creating the highest quality garments. Our women’s cashmere tanks and cashmere jumpers are made using one garment machine technology, meaning no precious cashmere yarn is wasted, making these garments seamless, which in turn maximises the longevity of wear.

Proudly Carbon Neutral

Proudly Carbon Neutral

Sourcing cashmere from Scotland’s only ‘vertical’ mill means that each part of the manufacturing process takes place within one single location, minimising the movement of our products and reducing airfreight. In 2021, we conducted a full life-cycle carbon assessment for our Brora cashmere, which allowed us work out the carbon footprint of each of our cashmere designs. Every year, we offset our carbon emissions by investing in projects that align with Brora’s ethos.
