Cashmere Care Guide

All of our cashmere designs are made by skilled craftspeople at one of the oldest mills in the Scottish Borders, and have been since Brora was founded in 1993. Generations of expertise are brought to every piece, and if properly cared for, your Brora knit will stand the test of time, only becoming softer and more luxurious with age, making it a timeless investment. Cashmere doesn’t need washing after every wear, methods such as airing and gently combing your knitwear are often enough to keep them in top condition. When it does need washing, simply follow the steps below.

Washing Instructions

Step 1

Soak your knitwear in lukewarm water using Brora Cashmere Shampoo or a similar mild detergent. Gently squeeze the soapy water through the knit. Do not rub, wring or stretch your cashmere.

Step 2

Rinse thoroughly and carefully in clean, lukewarm water. Saturated cashmere should not be lifted before the excess water has been gently squeezed out, as this may cause your pieces to stretch.

Step 3

Smooth your cashmere back into its original shape and lay flat on a towel to dry away from direct heat; never tumble dry your cashmere.

Step 4

When completely dry, press lightly with a cool iron.

Cashmere is one of the finest natural fibres in the world. It requires a little more care and attention than products made from coarser wools. After the first few uses, you might find small balls of fibres forming on the surface of your new cashmere pieces. These small balls, or “pills,” are caused by loose fibres tangling together as areas of your knit are rubbed during wear. Pills can be easily removed by hand or by using a Brora Cashmere Comb. When you remove the cashmere's "pills" this way, you will find that your cashmere will consolidate and soften further. If cared for properly, your cashmere will maintain its original sumptuous quality.

Cashmere & Moths

Cashmere & Moths

Never put clothes away dirty; this attracts moths and makes it more likely for the female moths to find the perfect site for their eggs to hatch. Wash your cashmere, and if you are thinking of storing your cashmere for the summer, use a Brora Zip Storage Bag to stop moths getting in. Store your storage bags in a clean cupboard until the next season arrives. Loop Brora Cedar Balls around your hangers to keep the moths at bay. If you discover holes in one of your favourite Brora pieces, don’t despair. We hold yarn from the previous few seasons in all our stores and can often match the colour, although you will have to darn it yourself - we couldn’t risk our enemy getting onto the mill floor!
