What is wool?
Wool is a protein fibre formed in the skin of sheep, therefore is one hundred percent natural. Since the Stone Age, it has been appreciated as one of the most effective forms of all-weather protection known to man, and science is yet to produce a fibre which matches its unique properties.
What is wool fabric?
At Brora, we use lots of different types of wool; merino, lambswool and supersoft lambswool, to name a few. As knitwear specialists, we will always factor in the varying properties of the different yarns we use, which allows us the expert knowledge needed to choose the right wool fabric for each design in our collection.
There are hundreds of breeds of sheep and each has its own special qualities in terms of the wool they grow. All of the wool we use in our Brora clothing is obtained from RWS certified suppliers, this addresses animal welfare, the farms and land they graze on. Woolgrowers actively work to safeguard the environment and improve efficiency, endeavouring to make the wool industry sustainable for future generations.
What is wool used for?
Wool can be knitted into an array of jumpers, cardigans or stunning lambswool blankets to provide that much-needed extra layer on spring and summer days when there’s a breeze in the air.
How is wool harvested?
Shearing
The sheep are sheared using scissors or electric clippers. The sheep are usually shorn once a year and the fleece is removed in long strokes.

Washing
The fleece needs to be thoroughly cleaned to wash away and impurities and natural oils. Some of these byproducts of cleaning the wool get used for other purposes. Lanolin, a wax secreted by sheep that helps to protect their wool, is included in many beauty products.
Carding
Sheep wool is naturally curly; carding straightens out the fibres and makes them soft and fluffy. Originally, carding would be done by hand using two metal combs. Today, most manufacturers use machines to card large batches of wool more quickly.
Dyeing
Wool absorbs water easily, which makes it simple to dye. It can be dyed at almost any stage of the process, depending on what the final product will be.
Spinning
The strands of wool fibre are then spun into yarn. Yarns are different in size, twist and ply depending on the finished design and desired outcome for the product.
Knitting
Then the wool knitted or woven in to your lovely Brora knitwear and fabric.

Biodegradable
At the end of its useful life, wool can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground. When a natural wool fibre is disposed of in soil, it takes a very short time to break down, whereas most synthetics are extremely slow to degrade.
Durable
Wool is also naturally elastic, so woollen garments can stretch comfortably with the wearer, then return to their natural shape, making them resistant to wrinkling and sagging. Wool, therefore, maintains its appearance in the longer term, adding value to the product and its lifespan.
