Meet the Founder of Brora: Victoria Stapleton

Brora was founded by Victoria Stapleton in 1993, well over 30 years ago. A long time devotee of Scottish textiles, she cut her teeth working for the tweed mill Hunters of Brora. Two years later, her entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and seeing a gap in the market for Scottish made colourful cashmere, Brora was established. We talked to Victoria about her Brora journey, passion for supporting age old craft, love of art & interiors and of course how she manages work commitments with the family life she holds so dear.

What was it like starting up over 30years ago?

What was it like starting up over 30years ago?

I remember sitting in my bedroom surrounded by boxes and boxes of cashmere. The phone was ringing off the hook for two days as the Financial Times had just cited Brora as having the best cashmere around and my home numb er was in the paper. With no internet people were just ringing to request the ‘black cashmere jumper’ they’d read Lucia van der Post had recommended as the ONE to buy, in the ‘How To Spend It’ feature.

When I started, I thought I’d never have a shop, but then a long lease came up on the King’s Road, our outlet shop today, and all the stars aligned for me to go for it. I then became a busy shop keeper running the mail order arm from the store basement. I thought I’d never have a second shop as I obviously couldn’t be in both places simultaneously but today we have 9 stores in the UK and one on New York’s Madison Avenue. I have had to learn to delegate!

How do you keep Brora current whilst staying connected to its heritage roots?

How do you keep Brora current whilst staying connected to its heritage roots?

We have worked with many of the same suppliers since the word go, when we were all about Scottish cashmere and British tweeds. As a fully-fledged fashion brand, it is inspiring for everyone at Brora as well as the customer if we collaborate with interesting people from time to time to bring their point of view to the story.

I adore working with different colours, textures and patterns, and with every turn I am searching for new sources of inspiration. I am also continually inspired by my daughters and stepdaughters. They constantly surprise me with their style and possess an instinctive talent for discovering treasures in markets and charity shops. Their mindset is so different from my own at that age, and heavily influences the way I consider fashion and design.

How has the fashion landscape changed in the time that you’ve owned Brora?

How has the fashion landscape changed in the time that you’ve owned Brora?

It is unrecognisable. Brands that were huge have disappeared; others have popped up and grown stratospherically. The web didn’t exist, shops were everything, there was no social media. I wouldn’t have known the meaning of digital marketing 10 years ago - it was all paper mailing. And of course, the consumer is much more aware of the fashion industry’s impact on our planet now. I wish people acted more on that particular subject; but I am optimistic that will change again over the next 10 years.

What is your personal ethos for Brora?

What is your personal ethos for Brora?

I hope customer and employees alike feel the overall ethos of the company fits with the life values I hold dear of friendliness, family orientation and valuing quality over quantity. It is not just bricks and mortar that make Brora so special; the people who work in our boutiques and head office have years of experience and knowledge and many of our team have been with Brora for over a decade, many two. I certainly feels like an extended family.

I’m also passionate about working with the right people for the job. I believe Scottish cashmere is the best in the world with the UK boasting some of the oldest woollen mills, that the Spanish produce fabulous espadrilles and our intricate hand-embroidered designs are made exquisitely in India.

How have you changed Brora over the years to make it even more sustainable?

How have you changed Brora over the years to make it even more sustainable?

When I started Brora, it was all about Scottish textiles, and f or the first ten years all our suppliers were in the UK, mainly up north. As we developed a larger collection, we looked to Liberty Arts Fabrics and started sourcing from incredible mills around Europe that specialise in fabrics such as corduroy, linen and silk.

In 2020, we conducted a full carbon assessment, and this has given us a much better idea of our strengths and weaknesses. It was satisfying to discover that we weren’t too far from reaching our earth-friendly goals due to my founding values of using natural materials and making close to home. But we still strive for better standards at every turn.

As of 2025, Brora became a Certified B Corporation. This is a globally Recognised standard which symbolises the high standards of social and environmental commitment which we continually strive for and has been at the core of Brora’s ethos for over three decades. This certification recognises the working environment, transparency, and accountability that Brora has endeavoured not only to achieve, but also to maintain.

Where do you see Brora heading in the next 5 years?

Where do you see Brora heading in the next 5 years?

I have always believed in organic growth, investing profits and being open to new and interesting creative approaches. You don’t know if you don’t try. I think it is important as a brand to stick to your purpose, understand your identity and know who your customer is and what they want to find when they come back for a visit, however, there always need to be a few surprises. So, I will keep those up my sleeve!

How do you find the balance running a successful business and time for yourself?

How do you find the balance running a successful business and time for yourself?

That hasn’t always been easy, but as I love sport and theatre, selfishly, I rarely missed school matches and shows! Now I am much better at pacing myself, I start the day with a swim, look at some emails and rarely show up in the office until 11am. I think the team quite like some quiet time without me asking endless questions.

What are your passions outside of Brora?

What are your passions outside of Brora?

I love house projects, changing a room by moving furniture, rehanging art, painting a different colour, buying a new rug or cushions to evolve a space. I studied at the Inchbald School of Design and the lessons learnt in those three short months have been invaluable.

My husband teases that I am happiest when I’ve played three sports a day. I rarely fit that in of course but any form of bat and ball is something I hope to enjoy into old age. Of course I’m fiercely competitive but try to hide it. I studied History of Art at university so any exhibition, gallery, museum or show is high up on my top leisure time pursuits!

How do you enjoy spending time with your family?

How do you enjoy spending time with your family?

We are a big gang, and we live in the house where my husband, Johnny’s parents lived, so it is home to lots of first cousins too. I genuinely love having the house full of all ages, laughing, crying, being together, cooking and sharing our lives. There are now some very small youngsters on the team so they bring us all back to the ground, literally at times. Home is where the heart is and I think our happiest times are when we are all gathered there.

What have you learnt throughout your journey with Brora?

What have you learnt throughout your journey with Brora?

Be firm but fair, lead by example, listen, think and decide. My ability to think quickly and be a good decision maker has been critical to the stability of Brora.

We are continuously facing the geo, political and economic issues that each year brings, even the weather can impact Brora and there are always surprises and challenges around the corner. Practical optimism is a helpful character trait.

I’ve more recently discovered the importance of surrounding myself with people who are excellent at what they do and then learning to delegate. And thus more time for tennis.
